This is a complete and comprehensive handbook which shall be used by all involved in the planning and design of chemical, biochemical, and other laboratories. Hald is a well known Danish statistician who previously published a book titled "A History of Probability and Statistics and Their Application before 1750". I felt the story was convoluted and jumped around a bit too much which makes it feel like there are gaps in the narrative; it didn't have a good flow to it. This book has plenty of instruciton, sample problems, and practice problems to get a student through an intro calc course easily and maybe more advanced ones too. More people should read and get the most out of it by finding something they enjoy, or authors and stories they enjoy. It is a little peculiar to be reviewing a beginning guitarbook titled, "Girl's Guitar Method". I have purchased about 6 different beginning guitar booksin the past 2 months or so and this one is outstanding. The odd thing about some of the beginning guitar booksis that after showing you some basics, using lessons for E, F, and G strings, and the B, C, and D, strings, they move very rapidly ahead, supposing I guess, that

Signi?cant advances in optical ?ber technology have created a need for an up-to-date book about optical ?ber fusion splicing. This book is unique in that it includes rigorous analyses from all of these very diverse ?elds. Fusion splicing of these ?bers has a signi?cant impact on their performance but the relevant technical infor- tion has hitherto only been accessible by sifting through numerous technical articles published over a span of several decades. This audience includes academic researchers - vestigatingthelatestoptical?bertechnology, designersofcommercialoptical ?ber, ?ber splicing equipment engineers, and product development engineers designingoptical?berdevicesfromcommerciallyavailablecomponents.M- ufacturersofoptical?ber, optical?ber components, optical?ber devices, and optical ?ber splicers all require a sophisticated understanding of optical ?ber fusion splicing. Over the past 15 years, a variety of new optical ?bers including rare-earth-doped ?ber, dispersi- compensating?ber, dispersion-matched?berpairs, andmicrostructured?ber have been introduced. Optical ?ber fusion splicing is a multi-disciplinary topic that combines concepts fromdiverse?eldsincluding opticalwaveguidetheory, heattransfer, materials science, mechanical engineering, reliability theory, ?uid mechanics, and even image processing. These ?bers are currently used extensively in both research and commercial

It provides a toolbox of general strategies and specific techniques that the reader can apply when optimizing fusion splices between novel fibers. It specifically addresses considerations important for fusion splicing of contemporary specialty fibers including dispersion compensating fiber, erbium-doped gain fiber, polarization maintaining fiber, and microstructured fiber. Finally, it discusses the future of optical fiber fusion splicing including silica and non-silica based optical fibers as well as the trend toward increasing automation. From the Back CoverThis book is an up-to-date treatment of optical fiber fusion splicing incorporating all the recent innovations in the field. Whilst serving as a self-contained reference work, abundant citations from the technical literature will enable readers to readily locate primary sources.
