Passenger services weren’t run until May 1st the following year with services starting between Philadelphia and New York. By 1988 a measure of Amtrak’s success was in carrying more passengers between Washington DC and New York than all the airlines on that route combined.
Some routes were eliminated during the 90s due to reduced federal funding but to prevent further reductions in service eight states provided financial support to make up the deficit and restore some of the affected trains.
The new millennium saw the Acela Express service introduced between Washington and Boston that could travel at speeds of up to 150mph. Routes rapidly opened up extending into Canada and between major American cities, and the rolling stock that had been inherited from the railway companies was modernised and Amtrak quickly placed orders for new locomotives and passenger cars to standardise the fleet.
